The model 36 has been around since the early 1900's. It was in 1980, though, that Smith and Wesson came up with the LadySmith name, and slightly modified the design of the model 36 to make it ergonomically and aesthetically more pleasing for female shooters. The compact size, grooved wood grips, light weight and excellent balance of the revolver have made it popular with male as well as female shooters.
